JUNE 16 IS YOUTH DAY
On June 16th 1975, around 20 000 pupils from Soweto, South Africa, protested the Apartheid government's implementation of Afrikaans as the mandatory language school subjects were to be taught in. This was only the catalyst for the Soweto Uprising, for when the students marched, they also marched in protest of the Bantu Education system as a whole, which had Black students learn an unjust education in incredibly segregated, poor and underfunded environments.
No revolution is bloodless, and many young people, an estimated 700, perished in brutal clashes with the police force.
Today we celebrate their courage and their persistence.
We celebrate the courage and the persistence of today's youth.
We have spotlighted 5 of our favourite young, South African artists that we believe deserve more recognition for their bold and incredible work. As Les says in their interview, youth is something inherently experienced by everyone. It is a vulnerable, messy and indignant time. It is a time to be bold.
